Dow volleyball beats crosstown Midland 3-1, the result it needed for the SVL North’s top seed

MIDLAND, Mich. — Midland’s two public high schools met on the volleyball court Thursday, Oct. 8, and Dow had more than bragging rights to play for. A win over Midland High would lock up the Saginaw Valley League North’s top seed for the league semifinals on Oct. 15, the Midland Daily News reported.

The Chargers have been hard to slow down. Dow swept Bay City Central 25-12, 25-14, 25-12 on its Senior Night last Thursday and moved to 4-0 in North play, according to the Daily News. MaxPreps counted the sweep as Dow’s 12th win in a row and listed the Chargers at 31-5-3, with 14 wins in their last 16 home matches.

Midland has had a rougher few weeks. The Chemics fell 3-0 to Mount Pleasant last Thursday, losing the sets 25-19, 25-19 and 25-13, MaxPreps reported. They had lost five of their last six on the road and stood at 17-11-3 on the season.

First serve was set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at Dow, with the match listed for streaming on the NFHS Network, according to MaxPreps.

It was a full week for the Chargers. Dow’s boys soccer team was scheduled to play Lapeer on Tuesday and Clarkston on Thursday, both at 5:30 p.m., the school’s GoFan page showed.

Updated Oct. 12, 2026: Dow beat Midland 3-1 on Oct. 8, MaxPreps results show. By the Daily News’ account above, that was the result the Chargers needed to secure the SVL North’s top seed for the Oct. 15 league semifinals.
