Muskegon South Pierhead Light hosts a free costume climb Halloween party Saturday
MUSKEGON, Mich. — Families can dress up and climb Muskegon’s 1903 South Pierhead Light on Saturday for a Halloween party that Pure Michigan describes as playful rather than scary.
The event is Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Muskegon South Pierhead Light, 1431 Beach St., according to Pure Michigan. Michigan Public lists a 1 p.m. start. Costumed children pick up treats as they climb 54 steps toward the lantern room, with views of Lake Michigan, the Muskegon Channel and the harbor at the top.
Pure Michigan lists admission as free for children in costume. The Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy, which runs public climbs at the light, says its annual Halloween trick-or-treat climb lets kids in costume climb free in the company of an adult who pays the usual tower admission.
Parking is available near the NOAA Lake Michigan Field Station or at Pere Marquette Park, Pure Michigan says. From the gift-shop area on the beach side of the station, a marked path leads toward the channel and the pierhead light. City beach parking fees may apply.
The ironclad tower sits on the south pier at Pere Marquette Beach. Regular summer tower tours wrap after Labor Day; the conservancy lists the Halloween climb as its final public event of the year and points visitors to Facebook for last-minute weather or schedule notes.
