MUSKEGON, Mich. — Zaac Charbonneau scored three times Saturday night as the Muskegon Lumberjacks beat the Youngstown Phantoms 5-2 at Trinity Health Arena, ending a four-game winless stretch and splitting a weekend that began with a marathon shootout loss.

Charbonneau, a 16-year-old forward from Gatineau, Quebec, now has nine goals in his first 10 USHL games, the league said. He opened the scoring on a first-period power play, one-timing a cross-slot pass from captain Rudolfs Berzkalns after Felix Färhammar set up the play. Youngstown answered 16 seconds later on a long shot by Brody Berard.

Muskegon took control in the second period. Maxim Šimko poked in a loose puck on another power play at 7:04, and about three minutes later Charbonneau finished a breakaway set up by Louis Jonerheim’s pass for a 3-1 lead.

Lukas Zajic pulled the Phantoms within a goal 3:16 into the third, but Šimko scored again off a two-on-none rush with Anthony Thomas-Maroon, and Charbonneau sealed his first career USHL hat trick with an empty-net goal. Goaltender Oscar Westman stopped 31 of 33 shots, according to the team.

Friday’s shootout. The teams needed regulation, overtime and eight shootout rounds to settle Friday’s game, which Youngstown won 3-2 when its eighth shooter, Jesse Orlowsky, scored, Local Sports Journal reported. Thomas-Maroon scored Muskegon’s first goal, and Berzkalns tied the game with his first goal of the season after Westman was pulled with less than three minutes left. Westman finished with 26 saves, and about six shots rang off a post or the crossbar during the game.

“We have to get our stuff together on Fridays,” Lumberjacks coach Colten St. Claire told Local Sports Journal. “We have great weeks of practice and we talk about it all the time.” Muskegon has yet to win the first game of a weekend this season.

Up next. The Lumberjacks fly to Lincoln, Neb., for two games against the Lincoln Stars next weekend.
