MUSKEGON, Mich. — Mona Shores brought a 5-1 record and first place in the Ottawa-Kent Conference Green to Hackley Stadium on Friday night, Oct. 9, where Muskegon was waiting with a chance to tighten the race.

The Sailors were 3-0 in the league, according to MaxPreps, and had won five straight since a 35-27 opening loss at St. Mary’s Prep. Last week they held off Byron Center 29-28.

Muskegon was 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the league, in third place. A Big Reds win would have left both teams with one league loss.

The two have played two common opponents so far. Mona Shores beat Byron Center by a point, while Muskegon lost at Byron Center 48-20 on Sept. 25. Both beat Reeths-Puffer handily, Mona Shores 42-13 on the road and Muskegon 45-14 at home.

Muskegon was coming off a 30-7 win over Forest Hills Northern in which De’Shad Lawrence and Jasiyah Gamble each ran for 119 yards and a touchdown, according to Local Sports Journal. Quarterback Cordell O’Leary added 85 rushing yards and a touchdown and threw a 55-yard scoring pass to Jayvon Burmeister.

Mona Shores’ defense had allowed 14 or fewer points in four of its six games, including shutouts of Portage Northern and Union.

On Oct. 16, Mona Shores hosts Forest Hills Northern, and Muskegon plays at Union.
