Bad Axe soccer shares the Big Thumb title after a 3-3 home draw with USA
BAD AXE, Mich. — Bad Axe High School’s boys soccer team forced a shared Big Thumb Conference championship on Thursday with a 3-3 draw against Unionville-Sebewaing/Cass City on the Huron County home field, Tuscola Today reported.
USA jumped ahead early. Bad Axe kept answering. USA coach Aaron Kuhl said his side got the fast start it wanted, then eased off and let Bad Axe back into the match on its own pitch.
“We knew Bad Axe was going to have a lot going forward,” Kuhl said. “They were up for it on their home field, and we were going to have to kind of step up.”
Down 3-2 late, USA found an equalizer to lock the split title. Kuhl said he expected another goal somewhere in the final stretch and called the shared championship a mark of a resilient season.
For Bad Axe, the draw kept the Hatchets from giving the league trophy away at home and put their name on the conference board alongside the co-op from Tuscola and Huron counties. League hardware is scarce enough on the Thumb that a share still hangs in the gym.
Thursday’s result closes the Big Thumb regular-season race. Playoff brackets follow the state association calendar.
