PIGEON, Mich. — The biggest game on the Thumb Coast on Friday night, Oct. 9, was in Pigeon, where Laker celebrated homecoming against Cass City with a home playoff date and a share of a division title in play.

Laker (4-2, 2-1 Big Thumb White) and Cass City (5-1, 2-1) met with the inside track to a Week 10 home game at stake, and the winner could have split the Big Thumb White championship had Millington lost to Sandusky, according to the Huron Daily Tribune. Laker beat Cass City twice last season, including a Week 10 rematch.

In Kinde, North Huron (5-1, 2-1 Big Thumb Red) had its own homecoming against Akron-Fairgrove (4-2, 3-1). The Warriors have averaged a little more than 45 points a game since their loss to Bay City All Saints, the Tribune reported, and a win would have moved them a step closer to the 8-player playoffs.

In Sanilac County, Deckerville (5-1, 3-1 Big Thumb Blue) played Mayville (2-4) with the Blue Division title still within reach. The Eagles bounced back from a loss to Dryden by beating Kingston 38-20, and a Kingston upset of Dryden that Friday would have left the three teams sharing the crown.

Ubly (4-2, 3-1 Big Thumb Black) was home against Caro (3-3), which plays in the Big Thumb White, after a close loss to Unionville-Sebewaing. The Bearcats needed the playoff points: their last two games are against Millington and Cass City. The teams have met just once, a 42-6 Ubly win in 2022.

Harbor Beach (0-6) traveled to Reese (0-6), and one of them was going to leave with a first win. The Pirates have lost close ones the last two weeks, 34-30 to Sandusky and 22-14 to Vassar.

Bad Axe (2-4, 2-2 Big Thumb Gold) played a night early, on Thursday, Oct. 8, at Burton Bentley, because Genesee County schools hold their 8-player home games on Thursdays amid a shortage of officials. A Hatchets win would give them a winning Gold Division record.
