Monroe’s SMCC and Jefferson, both unbeaten, meet Friday with the Huron League title on the line
MONROE, Mich. — Two Monroe football teams that have not lost this fall meet Friday night, and only one will finish the regular season unbeaten.
St. Mary Catholic Central and Jefferson are each 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the Huron League, according to standings published by The Monroe News. Kickoff is 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16. The Monroe News lists the game at Riverview Gabriel Richard; MaxPreps lists St. Mary Catholic Central as the home team.
It is the last league game for both schools. No other Huron League team has fewer than two league losses, so Friday’s winner will finish alone atop the eight-team league. The Monroe News’ sports editor, Niles Kruger, called it the last game in the rivalry in his weekly picks column.
MaxPreps ranks St. Mary Catholic Central No. 70 in Michigan and Jefferson No. 85. SMCC has outscored opponents 253-110, and Jefferson has outscored its opponents 272-112, according to MaxPreps.
The two have played much of the same schedule. SMCC beat Flat Rock 29-19, Grosse Ile 28-21 and Milan 50-0. Jefferson beat Flat Rock 28-26 on Sept. 25 in its closest game, beat Milan 60-22 and shut out Grosse Ile 36-0 last Friday, MaxPreps shows.
St. Mary Catholic Central leads the all-time series 12-4 across 16 meetings, according to USA Prep Football’s records.
Both teams close the regular season Oct. 23 outside the league. SMCC plays at Hanover-Horton, and Jefferson hosts Clinton.
