Flint Día de Muertos events: free celebrations Oct. 29 at the Flint Farmers’ Market and Nov. 6 at the Flint Institute of Arts
FLINT, Mich. — Flint families have two free chances to mark Día de Muertos, the Mexican tradition of remembering loved ones who have died, starting next week.
Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Flint Farmers’ Market. Latinos United for Advancement plans a free Día de Muertos event from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Ramsdell Room at the Flint Farmers’ Market, 300 E. First St., with entertainment, painting, food and raffles, MLive reported.
Friday, Nov. 6, at the Flint Institute of Arts. The FIA and the Latinx Technology & Community Center host a Día de Muertos Community Day from 4 to 7 p.m. at the museum, 1120 E. Kearsley St. Admission is free.
The museum lists art-making and art demonstrations for all ages, calavera (skull) face painting, live music from the Flint Institute of Music’s Music Around Town series and food. Events are in Isabel Hall, the lobby and the galleries, according to the FIA.
Bring a photo. Guests are invited to bring a photo or small memento of a loved one to place on the museum’s community ofrenda, the decorated altar at the center of the holiday. The FIA calls the program “a collaboration rooted in community, culture, and shared creativity.”
About the holiday. Día de Muertos is traditionally observed Nov. 1 and 2. Flint’s two events fall the week before and the week after.
