Troy Athens hosted Troy High in crosstown volleyball Thursday, days before the Colts host a boys soccer district
TROY, Mich. — Troy’s two public high schools met in varsity volleyball Thursday night, when Troy High visited Troy Athens at 7 p.m., according to both schools’ athletics schedules. Athens High School is at 4333 John R Road. Troy won 3-2, taking the deciding fifth set 16-14, according to results posted to MaxPreps.
Going into the match, Athens was 16-9, its athletics site showed. The Red Hawks have swept Royal Oak, Groves, Avondale, Waterford Kettering, Dearborn and Chandler Park, beat Berkley 3-1 and edged Rochester 3-2 on Sept. 17. They lost 3-1 at Notre Dame Prep on Oct. 8 and went 1-3 at a Power Series tournament two days later. A score from Tuesday’s home match against Seaholm had not been posted by Thursday morning.
Troy, under new head coach Scott Germansky, has swept North Farmington, West Bloomfield, Seaholm, Waterford Kettering, Royal Oak and Groves and beat Berkley 3-1, according to the Colts’ athletics site, which lists the team at 7-0. The site does not show results for several tournaments and road matches, including Rochester on Oct. 1 and Avondale on Oct. 8.
After the 3-0 win over Seaholm on Sept. 17, Germansky said in a post on the school’s site that his team had “battle tested” itself against strong opponents early. “We believe we can win the OAA White,” he said.
The teams share four opponents with matching results. Each beat Berkley 3-1 and swept Royal Oak, Groves and Waterford Kettering.
Athens plays at St. Mary Prep on Oct. 20 and hosts West Bloomfield on Oct. 28. Troy hosts Franklin on Oct. 22 and a home quad with OLSM, Adams and Lakeland on Oct. 27. The Colts’ schedule lists Troy High as a volleyball district host the week of Nov. 2.
Troy High also hosts MHSAA boys soccer District 13. The Colts play the winner of a first-round game between Royal Oak and Athens at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, followed by a 7 p.m. semifinal among Seaholm, Groves, Berkley or Renaissance, the school said. The district final is 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Troy. The school’s announcement said six teams in the district were ranked in the top 30 in Division 1.
Updated Oct. 16, 2026: Troy High won the match 3-2 (17-25, 27-25, 29-31, 25-20, 16-14), handing Athens its first league loss, according to a MaxPreps recap. This preview’s headline, summary and opening paragraph are now in the past tense. Read our story on the match.
