Warren hosts Michigan’s 70th fall coin show Nov. 20–22, with a holiday market and library history talks on the way

Long, low brick-and-concrete college buildings with patterned window columns sit behind a wide lawn, a flagpole and budding trees under a clear blue sky.

WARREN, Mich. — The Michigan State Numismatic Society brings its 70th annual Fall Coin Show & Convention to Macomb Community College’s South Campus Nov. 20–22, one of several events on Warren’s calendar between now and Thanksgiving.

Admission and parking are free all three days, according to the society. The show runs 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, in the Sports & Expo Center, Building P, 14500 E. 12 Mile Road. Members with a current-year society card can enter at 10 a.m. Friday. The Birmingham-Bloomfield Coin Club and the Royal Oak Coin Club are co-hosts.

Collectors can trade coins, paper money, tokens and medals with dealers on the show floor or have pieces looked over. The society listed 55 dealers as of Oct. 11. ANACS, a grading service, will take coin submissions on site all weekend.

The featured guest is Bob Evans, a co-discoverer and the chief scientist of the recovery of the S.S. Central America, the “Ship of Gold” that sank in 1857. He is scheduled to speak at 1 p.m. Friday, and former American Numismatic Association President Thomas Uram follows at 2 p.m. with a talk on the Lafayette dollar. Saturday’s program for young collectors runs 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes a hands-on session with Evans at 1 p.m. The society says children ages 4 to 17 have free activities all weekend.

Adults need a photo ID to enter, and visitors should bring cash because most dealers don’t take cards or digital payments, the society’s FAQ says. Exhibit applications are due Oct. 19. Tickets to the Friday night 70th anniversary banquet are $55 by Nov. 2 and $70 after.

Holiday market Nov. 14: The same building hosts the Simply Unique Market’s holiday show Nov. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Organizers say it will feature more than 100 local vendors. Admission is $5, and children under 12 get in free.

History at the library: The Warren Public Library has a run of history programs on its calendar. “The French Era of Detroit: 1701-1840” is Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at the Civic Center Library. “MI Forensic Files,” an adult program, follows there Oct. 27 at 6 p.m., and “Women’s Suffrage: We Won the Vote” is Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. The library also lists a Local Book & Author Fair at the Civic Center Library on Nov. 14.

On Nov. 21, the Saturday of the coin show, author Sherry A. Burton speaks on the Orphan Train movement, which the library says moved more than 250,000 children out of Eastern cities starting in 1854. The free program runs 2 to 3:45 p.m. at the Arthur Miller Branch, 5460 Arden. Reservations can be made online with a library card or by calling 586-751-5377.
